1. Windows & Surface Firmware Updates
Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, then Check for updates.

Also, install optional updates (driver and firmware updates are often listed here).

Download and install the latest Surface Drivers and Firmware bundle for your specific model from the official Microsoft Surface Support site.

2. Display Driver Issues (Intel/AMD)
Display drivers are a known freeze culprit on Surface devices.

Open Device Manager > Display adapters, right-click your Intel/AMD GPU > Update driver.

If it’s already updated, try rolling back the driver or uninstalling and reinstalling it from Microsoft’s Surface driver pack (linked above).

3. Storage (SSD) Health Check
Freezing often results from disk errors:

Open Command Prompt (Admin) and run:

bash
Copy
Edit
chkdsk C: /f /r
Schedule the scan and restart. Also run:

bash
Copy
Edit
sfc /scannow
Followed by:

swift
Copy
Edit
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
4. Thermal Management or Power Issues
Surface Laptops are prone to overheating, especially during Zoom/Teams calls or when charging. If freezing occurs after sleep/wake or when plugged in:

Turn off Fast Startup:

Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what power buttons do > Change settings > Uncheck "Turn on fast startup".

Adjust power plan:

Use Balanced or create a custom plan with CPU max state capped at 95% to reduce heat buildup.

5. Malware, AV Conflicts, or Background App Overload
Run a full scan with Windows Defender. Also check for:

3rd-party antivirus tools (Norton, McAfee, etc.) — try temporarily disabling or uninstalling.

Disable background apps via:

Settings > Privacy > Background apps > turn off unnecessary apps.

6. Check Reliability Monitor for Clues
Open Start > Search: “Reliability Monitor”

Look for errors at the time of freezing. Common error sources: Video Hardware Error, Windows Hardware Error, or LiveKernelEvent.
